The MonaLisa Touch

The MonaLisa Touch

The MonaLisa Touch is an innovational application in the use of lasers and a revolutionary treatment for women who experience vaginal discomfort and urinary tract problems that occur with menopause. Laser therapy has been used for many different medical conditions including skin regeneration, hair removal and cancer. Now this application can restore and revitalize the vaginal tissue without the use of hormones.

The MonaLisa Touch works the same way facial rejuvenation lasers have been used for years. It “breathes” new life into your tissues so you can start acting as young as you feel. The MonaLisa Touch uses an FDA approved laser to rejuvenate the vaginal tissue by stimulating the production of collagen.

The MonaLisa Touch is indicated for women with gynecologic changes due to decreases in estrogen. Women with vaginal dryness, urinary incontinence, and recurrent infections are good candidates for treatment. Women who have had breast cancer, thrombophlebitis or other contraindications to estrogen therapy can benefit immensely from the treatments.

After menopause many women experience dryness in the vagina that can lead to painful intercourse, urinary frequency and recurrent infections. The unique laser probe is a painless treatment that restores vaginal moisture without the use of estrogen. The treatments improve circulation to the vaginal tissues improving blood flow, moisture, elasticity and reduction in infections. It is the ideal treatment for women with recurrent vaginal infections due to low estrogen after menopause.

Lichen sclerosis is a condition that occurs with women when the vaginal tissues become dry and painful with tears in the skin around the vagina. Treatments usually involve using topical cortisone treatments. The Mona Lisa Touch is an alternative treatment that can help heal the tissues with lichen sclerosis by restoring normal circulation and increasing collagen.

The general recommendation is to have 3 treatments 6 weeks apart followed by a treatment once per year, however treatment frequency is established on an individual basis. No anesthetic is required however on the second and third treatment, a topical anesthetic will be used for the outer vaginal tissues. Side effects can include some vaginal irritation, discharge, and spotting.  Contraindications are pregnancy, vaginal prolapse, history of radiation to vagina or rectum, active infections, history of reconstruction with mesh, impaired wound healing, history of keloid formation, or treatment with anticoagulant therapy. Women with herpes should pre-treat with prophylactic medication.

MonaLisa Touch was developed in Italy and has been used widely in Europe. There are many “Peer Reviewed” publications documenting the safety, efficacy and long term benefit for women with vaginal discomfort, dryness and chronic urinary tract infections.
